Assurant Solutions is one of your options for purchasing an extended warranty plan for any household appliance. After all, even the highest quality appliance can experience unexpected problems. Having the coverage of an extended warranty on your side can help give you some peace of mind and provide repairs when you need it. So is Assurant the company you should trust with your purchases?
Whenever you purchase a major home appliance, you will likely receive a factory warranty policy that will cover a certain range of problems in the early lifespan of your product. Of course, problems don't just happen when the factory warranty is in effect. They can, and often will occur past that protection plan's expiration date, as well.
Picking up an extended protection plan can help you protect your purchase for long past that first year or so with a factory warranty. In some cases, it can even give you coverage for situations that may be out of the scope of the default plan. The key is to pick up a policy that provides excellent and timely service for a good value.
What Do Assurant Solutions Home Warranties Do?
Assurant solutions home warranties are available whenever you purchase an appliance through Amazon, ATGStores, or Assurant themselves. You can also receive coverage from Assurant through under companies underneath them, such as Service Protection Advantage.
The type of coverage you can get for your appliance will depend on the kind of service plan that you decide to purchase. With multiple policies, Assurant does offer a way for you to pick one the option that best fits the cost of the appliance and your plans. This variety allows you to receive more than the basic coverage given by a factory warranty.
Assurant allows you to purchase individual plans or cover several appliances underneath one policy.

You can see a sample of what the terms and conditions of an Assurant plan will look like on the company's website. While the exact words of your contract will determine what is available, most policies will provide coverage for any damages that are a result of:
For computers and other technology, you will receive coverage for the original mouse, speakers, monitor, and keyboard under an Assurant policy. The company also provides technical support for maintaining the initial state of the computer, but not for customized software, post-purchase installations, or defective software errors.
While you can purchase an Assurant plan for many different types of appliances, coverage is not available for products older than twelve months of age (unless you are renewing a policy) or refurbished devices. The sample terms and conditions also outline several situations where the service plan does not apply, such as improper storage, operator negligence, industrial and commercial settings, and more.
Under a standard Assurant solutions plan, you do not receive accidental protection. However, you can purchase this additional policy to provide repairs and replacements whenever accidental damages do occur. This type of warranty works as a supplemental policy to cover more potential problems over time.

No Lemon Replacement
"No lemon" guarantees provide a way for customers not to have to conduct frequent repairs on their appliances. With an Assurant policy, the company will offer a replacement appliance if it meets certain conditions. Under the terms, this situation constitutes of if the same component fails three times or if the device requires a fourth repair.
However, not all repairs within a product's lifetime may qualify for the no lemon guarantee. For example, if an error on a part happened before your purchased the home protection policy, then the same mistake occurred two more times during the plan, the piece would need to fail one more time while under coverage to be eligible for replacement.
Filing a Claim
When you submit a claim, you can do so through your Assurant account online. Call services are also available. According to its claims policy, Assurant can take up to 24 hours to process claims before sending out someone to inspect the appliance and conduct repairs.
Claim fulfillment can happen through three different options. The first is in-home service, which involves an Assurant technician perform the repairs at your home. In some cases, Assurant may also ship simple plastic parts to your home for self-repair, such as knobs.
Depot repair can also happen if the appliance needs more work than what's possible to do in your home. Assurant will pay for shipping costs both to and from your home if a repair is necessary. However, if the technicians determine that the item is working or not covered by your service plan, then you will be responsible for the return shipment.
Assurant will also, if necessary, replace or reimburse your product. You can expect a comparable appliance of the same kind and quality, or you may receive a reimbursement that does not exceed the initial purchasing cost of the product. If the company send you a new appliance, you will need to send them your non-functioning one in return.
So long as you only have the standard Assurant Solutions coverage plan, you will not need to pay any deductible values. However, this changes if you decide to opt-in for the Accidental Damage Option. Under this type of policy, you will be responsible for paying the listed deductible value as determined by your terms and condition. For repairs to multiple products, you may spend several deductible amounts in the same claim.
The length of your coverage will depend on the plan that you select. Once your plan expires, you may be able to renew your policy at the discretion of Assurant. This process may involve a price change on your system to better reflect the age and condition of your appliance.
Unlike some other home protection policies, Assurant's coverage does not start until thirty days after the date of policy purchase (not the time of product purchase). This condition means that any problems that arise within that first month do not qualify for coverage, even if your purchase your extended warranty on the same day you purchase the product.
Food Loss Reimbursement
Assurant provides extended warranties for multiple types of appliances, including refrigerators and freezers. If your fridge requires a repair but the food inside has spoiled due to the problem, you can receive up to $100 in food loss reimbursement value. You can only gain this amount once per claim, and the loss must be due to a product malfunction and not another event like a power outage.
If you decide that you want to cancel your warranty, Assurant allows you to do so at any time. If you submit your cancellation notice within 30 days of purchase, you will receive a complete refund. Presenting a cancellation notice at any time past this point means you will receive a pro-rated price minus any claims or $25.
Assurant maintains the right to cancel your policy in the event of fraud or nonpayment on the part of the policyholder.
Assurant does not have explicit details of the cost of their protection plans available online. However, policies available from their branch companies, like Service Protection Advantage, can cost between $75 and $200, depending on the length of your coverage and the number of appliances you choose to cover. Extra policies like accident coverage can add to the cost.
When you look at other extended home warranties, you can find comparable costs from many distributors, such as Lowest and Home Depot. However, these policies can reach might higher prices, especially if you are purchasing a more costly appliance. Even so, many different factors will impact the final cost of your policy.
How It Compares
Assurant Solutions provides many of the same features and benefits that you can find in other extended home appliance warranties. It's not missing much, save for a quick repair guarantee (which reimburses you if you don't receive completed service within a specific timeframe) or a no use policy (where you receive a percentage of your initial costs if you don't claim your coverage).
The thirty-day delay is another detractor on Assurant's part, as you can find other protection plans that start immediately from the day of purchase. The lost food reimbursement is also much lower than some other policies, which can cover up to $300 of damaged items due to a technical error. If you store a lot of food at once, Assurant may not be suitable for what you need.
While the cost of an Assurant policy isn't unusually high, you may be able to handle not having an extended coverage policy at all. Putting the money into a savings account or emergency fund may be a better investment, especially since Assurant doesn't reimburse you if you don't file a claim your service contract.
Regarding customer satisfaction, however, Assurant has not done much to live up to the quality you may expect from the level of service the company advertises. Many customers have had problems receiving timely help to repair their problems. Contacting anyone to receive customer assistance has also been a consistent problem across many reviews.
Part of this problem is thanks to the lack of vendor availability in some areas. Even if a vendor appears as scheduled in the online claims tracker, sometimes there are disconnects between what the site says and if a vendor is readily available to come and check an appliance in need of repairs.
Customers have also reported troubles with receiving payouts for reimbursements, potentially even dodging the request. This problem has not only happened with customers, but with vendors as well, who have had difficulties with receiving payouts for work. Many customers also note that there is a lack of communication during service requests, making it difficult to get help.
What's incredibly notable is that there doesn't seem to be any reviews online that has had a positive experience when working with Assurant. While the insurance policy itself seems to be a strong one (if not missing some helpful features), the lack of overall positive customer response begs the question of if the policy is worth considering to buy.
What We Think
It can be natural to consider purchasing an extended warranty, especially whenever you're investing in a costly appliance. These plans seem to provide peace of mind and some help whenever troublesome repairs arise, but Assurant appears to be lacking severely in that key element: providing the assistance that customers are paying for and need.
In comparison to some other warranties out there, Assurant doesn't have too many exceptions and loopholes to prevent certain types of problems and repairs from qualifying. However, even without numerous provisions to make it easy for the company to pull out of fixing an appliance, Assurant seems to do plenty of that by throwing up red tape and just providing minimal service.
When you combine that with the already somewhat lacking ends in its service, Assurant starts to seem less and less like a reasonable extended warranty solution. Customers from around the company report issues, and vendors as well. With the minimal amount of information available on the company's website about pricing and policies, it's not very appealing.
The delay of service and the lack of a no-use reimbursement policy seal the deal: that Assurant Solutions policies are not worth your time or money. Instead, you may find a much better (and more reliable) deal for coverage from another source. The question just then becomes a matter of if you want to do the groundwork or if you'd rather tuck your spare $200 into savings.
Even across comparable extended warranty plans, it may be in your better interest to simply build an emergency fund, rather than paying out for what Assurant can offer. If you don't have any problems with your appliance throughout its lifetime (or the length of an extended policy), then you'll have the money available for other things. Most necessary repairs often don't cost as much as you'd expect.
