That’s where home warranties come into play. These warranties act a bit like car warranties. They will cover your appliances and systems if they break, and can often save you hundreds or even thousands in repairs for a monthly premium.
Some people confuse home warranties with home insurance, which is an understandable mistake. Home insurance will cover items in the case of a fire or flood. Home warranties cover items that break through usual wear and tear.
Ahead, we’ll take a look at the Cross Country Home Services warranty options and let you know whether or not they’re worth the monthly cost.
Cross Country Home Services Warranty
Cross Country Home Services, or CCHS, has been in business for 35 years, providing home warranties to homeowners, property managers, and realtors.
Unlike a lot of the other regional home warranty companies in the USA, Cross Country Home Services is a national brand. You can purchase one of their warranties in every state and access their customer service 24/7.
One of the selling points of CCHS is their network of over 40,000 service technicians, who are on call to help customers at all times.
Before we get into the breakdown and review of the CCHS homeowner policies, we’ll take a look at the HMS National division of Cross Country Home Services.
CCHS markets HMS National as their option for real estate professionals, although they offer homeowner packages as well. The network of technicians is the same, and their Marketopia options offer competitive rates for home warranty policies.
We thought this division would be worth noting in our review since it’s the policy options for real estate agents who want to buy a home warranty for their clients.

TotalProtect Home Warranty
The TotalProtect Home Warranty is the line of homeowner policies from CCHS. You have the choice of three plans with TotalProtect: Appliances Plan, Systems Plan, and Combo Plan.
As you can probably guess, the name of each policy relates to the items it covers. We’ll list them below for your review, but many of them are about what you’ll expect from plans of a similar fashion.

As you can see, combination coverage from CCHS is the comprehensive option that doesn’t leave anything to chance. In some states, the cost of this plan isn’t much more than the first two options, which means it truly represents the best value.
We’ll get more into the pricing in the section below, but the drastic pricing differences from state to state means combination coverage may or may not be a good deal. You’ll have to decide for yourself whether you want to cover expensive systems, appliances, or both.
180-Day Service Guarantee
One of the noteworthy features that TotalProtect home warranties offer is a 180-service guarantee. This means that they cover your appliances and systems for half a year after their technicians complete their work.
You can contact TotalProtect and receive free services if their technician did a faulty job, so long as you reach out within six months of their work.
This guarantee is much longer than most of the other home warranty companies we’ve seen. Almost all of the other companies operating in this space give a 30 or 60-day guarantee, making TotalProtect seem like a solid choice for homeowners who like the security of knowing the job was done right.
Another element of CCHS that we think is worth noting is the lack of option coverage options. Pools and spas are the only things that will cost you a bit more to insure, but that’s almost always the case.
A lot of other home warranty companies will artificially deflate their cost by adding a bunch of appliances, systems, and other items to optional coverage. CCHS remains an affordable home warranty option while including all of these appliances and systems under a single fee.
You might be able to shop around and save some money if you don’t care about these options, but adding them to a policy from another company will almost always cost you more.
Some companies will even have standard items under the “optional” umbrella, leading to shock when it comes time to file your claim.
We prefer transparency, and that’s certainly what you get here with CCHS.
Claiming with CCHS
The first step in claiming with CCHS is to request a service by phone or on their website. You can call 800-474-4047 at any time, free of charge, and book an appointment for a technician to come and assess the damage. You could also file a claim on the TotalProtect website if that’s easier for you.
The service will then match you with a technician in your area, and they’ll handle most of the scheduling. TotalProtect gives them your address and contacts information, and they’ll work with you to choose a time that fits your busy schedule.
You’ll pay your deductible at the time of your service, and the technician will get to work figuring out what’s wrong. We should note that you might have to pay more than one deductible if the technician finds multiple faulty appliances that they need to fix, or if they have to involve another specialist in the issue.
After the assessment, the technician will make sure your repair falls under the warranty and get to work. TotalProtect technicians make sure to tell you if any added costs will apply before they start working, so you can cancel the job at any time.
You’re all good after that. You can give them your feedback and rely on the 180-day guarantee so you know the work will be complete.
Unlike a lot of other home warranty companies in the USA, CCHS doesn’t have a standard pricing structure. Most of what you’ll have to pay will depend on where you live, which might have something to do with the number of technicians they have in your area.
For instance, a quote for a home in Massachusettes will cost $35.95 a month for an Appliances Plan, $73.95 for a Systems Plan, and $83.95 for a Combo Plan. The same quotes for a California home will cost $33.95 for appliances, $27.95 for systems, and $40.95 for a combination.
In Nebraska, The charges will be $30.95, $40.94, and $49.95 respectively. As you can see, there are massive pricing differences between states, especially regarding the Combo Plan. You’ll need to visit the pricing section of the CCHS website to get a quote that applies to you.
The deductible appears to be standard across the board at $125, but you might see this vary a bit as well. This information is accurate as of November 2018. It’s worth checking your zip code to see if there are any differences in pricing for your location.
We looked as hard as we could for any news of a service fee but there doesn’t appear to be one. Instead, CCHS uses a deductible format. You’ll pay the first $125 in repairs and won’t have to face a charge for a technician to visit your house.
This is a nice feature since most home warranty companies in the USA will charge you when a technician comes to assess the damage.
This can be extremely frustrating the case of denied coverage since policyholders will be out of pocket for the technician fee and still have to pay for repairs without any assistance.
It’s difficult to get a sense of any home warranty company’s reputation when you look at public perception. Most of the reviews you’ll see on the CCHS website are positive, but that’s usually the case with most companies.
User reviews for Cross Country Home Services on other portals aren’t so kind. A lot of these testimonials complain about poor customer service, denied claims, and feeling as though they paid for their warranty only to be left hanging when they need it the most.
Unfortunately, this is the reality of almost any home warranty company you look at. In many ways, these negative reviews are the nature of the industry.
People don’t tend to leave positive reviews unless the service they received blew them away. You probably won’t hear from many customers who submitted a claim, received prompt service, and went about their lives.
On the other end of the spectrum, those who were displeased with their service will be more than happy to leave a scathing review. They feel as though their premiums went to waste, and they want to tell someone about it.
For these reasons, it’s hard to garner much about a home warranty company by looking at the reviews. A quick search of any of the home warranty companies in the USA will offer similar results as the reviews for CCHS, so we recommend that you don’t put too much stock into them.
What We Think
We liked what we saw from CCHS, and believe it’s one of the better national home warranty brands in the country. The prices are a bit difficult to pin down, but we like how CCHS uses the deductible system rather than a technician charge.
People tend to get frustrated with technician charges. These are usually $75 to $100, and you’ll have to pay them regardless of whether or not the tech actually fixes what’s wrong. They could visit, say that your claim won’t be processed, and you’ll be out the technician fee.
We also like the straightforward nature of the warranty plans through CCHS. You don’t have to pay a bunch of extra money to cover added features as you do with some of the other companies.
Another company might charge you extra for refrigerator coverage or coverage for another appliance. CCHS, on the other hand, has very few extras with their plans and cover almost everything upfront.
You can do a lot worse than CCHS, but we recommend comparing their price with other providers in your area. They can often be the cheapest solution to comprehensive home warranty coverage, but that’s not always the case.
The price fluctuates, and the cheapest option for someone in Minnesota might not be the same for someone in Florida. If you find that CCHS offers greater coverage than another company for a similar price, though, you’ll be in a good position to choose them as your warranty provider.
